Church of the Annunciation

The Church of the Annunziata in Saracena

The Church of the Annunziata in Saracena, located in the northern part of the town along the road leading to San Basile and Castrovillari, is what remains of the ancient Dominican Convent. This religious complex was founded in 1575, thirteen years before the construction of the Capuchin Convent.

In 1809, following the suppression of religious orders, the convent fell into progressive abandonment and decay. Today, the only surviving parts of the original structure are the sacristy, which has been adapted into a chapel, and the facade of the main altar of the old church. The convent’s garden was later converted into the town cemetery.

In 2012, the community of Saracena enthusiastically celebrated the 25th anniversary of the church’s restoration, in the presence of the Bishop of the Diocese of Cassano all'Jonio, Monsignor Nunzio Galantino. This event highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the building for the local community.

Today, despite the transformations and losses it has undergone over the centuries, the Church of the Annunziata remains a significant testimony to Saracena’s historical and artistic heritage.
