Chapels

Chapels

In the territory of Saracena, in addition to its three main churches, there are numerous chapels, some of which date back to the Byzantine era. The most significant ones include:

  • Chapel of Santa Maria dell'Alto Cielo or Ara Coeli: Dating back to the 12th century, located in the San Pietro district.
  • Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua: Built in the 16th century.
  • Chapel of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli: Erected around 1650, located on Via della Fiumara.
  • Chapel of Saint Anne: Dating back to the 17th century.
  • Chapel of Santa Maria del Garga or Madonna della Fiumara: Constructed in 1874.

Not far from this last chapel lie the ruins of the Church of Santa Maria de Garga or Ad Flumen, which dates back to the second half of the 11th century. At the beginning of the 17th century, the church was expanded and annexed to the Monastery of Colloreto, only to be abandoned two centuries later following the suppression of religious orders.
